The story of this magnificent fort begins with the anger of Raja Zalim Singh. Upset with his brothers over a dispute regarding their Jagir (estate), the King, accompanied by his mother, left his home and set out toward Delhi through the unforgiving desert.
The journey was long, and as evening fell, they decided to halt for the night in a small dhani (hamlet). This settlement belonged to the ‘Kuchbandhiyos’ (people who traditionally made brushes), consisting of just 10 to 15 mud houses. Recognizing the King, these simple, humble folks respectfully insisted that he stay the night with them.
🪔 The Mysterious Lamp on the Dark Hill – Kuchaman Fort
It was nighttime. After having dinner, as Raja Zalim Singh went to sleep, his eyes caught something unusual—a single lamp glowing in the pitch-black darkness on a distant, deserted hill.
Questions immediately flooded the King’s mind: “Who could possibly be living so far away on that rugged, isolated hill at this hour of the night?”
His curiosity was so intense that he couldn’t sleep. As soon as dawn broke, the King made his way straight toward that mysterious hill.

Upon reaching the hilltop, what the King saw changed the course of his life forever. A saint was sitting there, deeply absorbed in meditation and prayer. This great saint was none other than Bankhandi Baba.
The King and the saint engaged in a long, profound conversation. Seeing Raja Zalim Singh’s aura and destiny, Bankhandi Baba blessed him, handed him 7 stones, and commanded him to construct a fort right there on the hill.
Those 7 stones carried a deep meaning—they were a divine guarantee that 7 generations of Raja Zalim Singh’s lineage would rule this fort without interruption.

Empowered by the saint’s blessing, the King commenced the construction of the fort. In the pages of history, the foundation was laid on a very specific, auspicious day:

- Occasion: Kachi Diwali

No ruler of Kuchaman ever dared to build a palace or even a temple that stood equal to or taller than this Chhatri. Why? Because this is no ordinary structure… This Chhatri belongs to Bankhandi Baba!
